Sorge scores OT game-winner for Wings to advance

Ben Sorge scored from the back doorstep just over four minutes into the extra period as Waukesha edged Arrowhead 2-1 in the opening contest at the 2017 State Tournament at the Clamshell early Thursday afternoon.

The first period was scoreless even though Arrowhead had a couple chances but goalie Garrett Larsen turned aside all forays to keep the game scoreless. Shots in the period were deadlocked at nine apiece.

The Wings got on the board first courtesy of an Arrowhead penalty and a broken stick.

Arrowhead defenseman Justin Paddock broke his stick and dropped it to the ice, hoping to play body on a Waukesha forward. But when a pass came from the right side to the back door, Paddock was helpless to defend as Chad Larsen fired a shot from the low left side that beat Arrowhead goalie Peter Genatempo for the 1-0 lead. Ian Malcolmson and Kevin Broda registered helpers on the play.

The Warhawks had a couple opportunities in the middle of the period, but Larsen continued his stellar play to hold the narrow lead.

Waukesha killed off a pair of penalties late in the period to skate off with a 1-0 lead after two periods. Shots were 13-4 in favor of Arrowhead.

Arrowhead tied the contest in the middle of the third period when Caleb Beversdorf tapped in a puck under a prone defender for the score. After a brief goal review, the score was allowed much to the joy of the Arrowhead cheering section.

Both teams had nice chances late in the game, but either bad luck or good netminding kept the game tied at one, forcing an overtime period. Waukesha held a 12-4 shot margin in the period.

The Wings worked their magic a second time on the back door when Sorge gathered a pass and flipped it past the Arrowhead goalie for the game-winner with 3:51 remaining. Wyatt and Garrett Wilderman each tallied assists on the play.

In the game, Larsen stopped 25 shots while Genatempo played solid as well, making 26 saves for Arrowhead.
