If there was any suspense for the No. 1 seeded Arrowhead boys hockey team going into its WIAA sectional semi-final game against visiting Waupun on Feb. 21 at the Mullett Ice Center, AHS junior defenseman Matthew Chomniak quickly wiped it out.
Chomniak fired in two long range goals in less than 7 minutes to open the game, and suddenly, the No. 4-ranked Warhawks had themselves a quick 2-0 lead en route to a 6-0 win over the fifth-seeded Warriors. Another goal later in the period by freshman forward Will Bonk gave Arrowhead a comfortable 3-0 edge after the opening period.
AHS then scored three more goals in an action-packed second period en route to the sectional championship game at the Mullett at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24, against No. 3-seeded University School. The winner of that game advances to next week's state tournament in Madison. AHS defeated University School by a 6-3 score on Dec. 8.
"I'll tell you something; the guys came to play tonight" said a smiling Arrowhead coach Carl Valimont. "You could see it right from the start. That's about as good as it gets. We scored early, kept the pressure on them, and our defense didn't give them much. They were focused tonight. When we play like that, we're a pretty good hockey team."
Arrowhead (23-2-1) now finds itself just one win away from advancing to the state tournament for the third time in school history. Tuesday was the 13th time the Warhawks played in a sectional, and it will be the fifth sectional-championship match in school history.
