Wildcats notch two shutouts during tournament play

University School shut out Mosinee 5-0 Saturday to win the Pines Classic Tournament in Eagle River.

It was USM’s second straight shutout in the weekend tournament.

The Wildcats scored their first goal early in the game. In the Mosinee zone, USM junior Kenny Servis moved the puck to sophomore defenseman Joey Judge at the right point. Judge skated in to the top of the circle and released a low shot toward the far post. Senior Andrew Stewart was there, and he slammed the game-winner into the net at 1:19 of the first period.

USM scored its second goal on a power play. As the Wildcats calculatingly moved the puck around the Mosinee end, junior Ashton Wackym got it and fired a shot on net from the left face-off circle. The puck hit Mosinee’s senior goalie Wade Michalski and rebounded out to USM senior Aaron Storch near the left post. Storch centered it to senior Simon Leahy in the low slot. Leahy shot it and then grabbed his own rebound. As he was falling after being checked, Leahy knocked the puck past Michalski at 8:14.

The Wildcats scored another power play goal late in the second period. Storch skated the puck into the Mosinee left circle. He crossed it to Wackym in the low slot. Instead of shooting it into Michalski’s pads, Wackym passed it out to Leahy in the high right circle. Leahy snapped a one-timer inside the right post on the open side of the net at 16:29.

The goal gave the Wildcats added confidence, and they used that confidence to score another power play goal early in the third period. During a face-off in the Mosinee end, senior Nick Hermberg won the draw to Leahy in the slot. Leahy immediately passed it to Wackym at the top of the left circle. Like he was fulfilling a presidential directive, Wackym unleashed a guided missile into the far upper corner of the net to make it 4-0 at 2:38 of the final period.

USM added one more goal at 6:55 while skating 4-on-4. Breaking out of the USM zone, junior Nathan Burke lined the puck to senior James Shovers who was speeding into center ice on the right boards. Shovers raced into the Mosinee slot and whipped a wrist shot past Michalski.

In the game Michalski made 46 saves while USM’s senior goaltender Ben Myers made 26 saves to record the shut out.

Mosinee is now 10-5. USM is 11-6-2 as a result of the weekend’s wins. The Wildcats return home to play Onalaska at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. January 28th.
