ECM outshoots Cards by 30-12 margin in win

Hunter Scott scored twice and Michael Kapla pitched in two assists as top-ranked Eau Claire Memorial flew past Fond du Lac 4-1 in a Showdown in Titletown matchup at the Resch Center on Saturday afternoon.

The first period was scoreless until Scott took a drop pass in the high slot from Kapla and ripped a blast past Fondy netminder Charlie Blagoue's glove for a shortie at the 15:49 mark.

Old Abes held a 9-3 shot margin in the period.

The second period began as an adventure for Blagoue--playing in relief of injured starter Joe Rebedew--as he had his goalie stick knocked out of his hands and ended up in the corner. As play flowed to Fondy's offensive end, Blagoue skated over to retrieve his weapon, only to notice that ECM players were headed toward the open net with puck in tow.

A horrified Blagoue flew back to his position, and actually made two saves without a stick. He managed to borrow a teammate's stick for a few seconds until he was able to grab his normal lumber as play went the other way.

The Old Abes almost made it 2-0 when Alexander Dahl came out of the box after a penalty, grabbed the puck in the offensive zone and nearly beat Blagoue, but the Cardinal goalie was up to task and stoned the talented senior.

Later in the period, Fondy took a penalty and ECM would make it hurt.

On the delayed penalty call, the Old Abes actually worked an extra attacker into the play as netminder Saxton Soley skated off. Defenseman Mark Munger slipped a shot through the Fondy goalie's five-hole to make it 2-0, with assists from Dahl and Kapla.

Then just over two minutes later, Scott grabbed his own rebound and skated to his right and flipped the puck into the net for a 3-0 lead at the 12:36 mark of the period. Charlie Grasskamp and Josh Linn earned helpers on the play.

ECM outshot Fondy, 9-2 in the period.

In the third period, a mistake in the defensive zone cost ECM a shutout. A defenseman's pass was intercepted in the high slot by FDL forward Tyler Cizek, and he buried his chance past Soley's blocker to make it 3-1 and gave the Fondy fans something to cheer about just over two minutes into the third.

The score would remain the same until Matthew Knapp took a pass from Hayden Bowe and scored from the right circle at 11:08 of the period to account for the final 4-1 score. Mario Rossato also was credited with an assist.

Once again, ECM held the shot edge, 12-7 in the period.

Soley had 11 saves in the game for Memorial, while Blagoue made 26 stops for FDL.
