Penalties kill Antigo's chances against Waupaca

Two and a half power play goals provide the margin of victory

The Antigo Red Robins' struggles to kill penalties doomed their chances to upset the Brad Navin-less Waupaca Comets on Tuesday night at the Langlade County Arena. The Comets scored twice on power plays, and once more seconds after a penalty expired to beat the Robins 5-2.

Navin has been on the bench since injuring a knee last Thursday night in Tomahawk. Depending on who you ask, it was either a vicious knee-to-knee collision, or a legal hip check by a shorter skater. Either way, he is out for at least four weeks. Which meant that somebody would have to step up and take charge of the game. Tyler Donaldson and Beau Ash were more than up to the task. Donaldson scored three goals and assisted on a fourth, while Ash racked up minutes on defense, blocking shots and limiting the Robins chances.

Donaldson got things going early, beating a Robin defenseman on a two-on-two and scoring on a sharp wrist shot from the bottom of the left face-off circle just 35 seconds into the contest. Antigo goalie Jacob Sennholz, again filling in for the concussed Chris Eckerman, barely had time to get settled in his net.

The Robins seemed to overcome their season-long penalty killing woes when Caleb Stolzman scored a short-handed goal late in the first period to tie the score. Stolzman stole the puck from a Comet defenseman at the blue line and attacked with Joe Kubacki on a two-on-one. Using Kubacki as a decoy, he got Waupaca netminder Zach Martin to flinch and then beat him with a low wrist shot.

The teams traded goals in the second period, with the Comets scoring on a power play, and the Robins tallying an even-strength goal.

It appeared that Antigo had successfully killed a 5 on 3 advantage early in the third period, but Jared Erickson deflected a shot from Ash at the point to put the Comets up for good before the Robins could get back into a five-man defensive formation. Just a minute and a half later, Bjorn Asher scored a power play goal with an assist from Donaldson to give the Comets some breathing room. Donaldson finished off the scoring with an empty net goal with about two minutes left in the game.
