Janesville Jets continue to be pipeline for D1 prospects

National Signing Day for high school football players moving on to the college level was Wednesday.

The day is the culmination of the recruiting process, and it has become somewhat of a national holiday for college football enthusiasts. Most players have announced their intentions well before, but a few still opt for drama by picking from a few hats to proclaim their choice or flipping their decision at the last minute.

For hockey players, including those playing here for the North American Hockey League's Janesville Jets, the process is much different, and it varies from one player to the next.

Junior hockey has become the clear path to college hockey, and the Jets have become standard-bearer for a league that is setting new records every year for advancing players to the next level.

“It's a competitive hockey league for players who are typically 16-20 years old,” said Madison native Cole Paskus, a current member of the Jets roster who will play at UMass-Lowell and has written blog posts helping casual fans understand junior hockey.

“It's for players who are looking to get their college commitment. I like to think of it as a bridge to college.”
