In an ice hockey match between the two most recent state champions,
University School defeated Arrowhead 5-0 at USM Saturday evening.

The Wildcats came out ready to play, and out shot the Warhawks 15-4 in the
first period.  Arrowhead’s senior goalie Jake Michael survived the attack,
turning aside every USM shot in the period.  The Wildcats also checked
vigorously, delivering efficacious hits throughout the period.

The Wildcats continued to truck-stick in the second period and wore the
Warhawks down.  Eventually it paid off on the scoreboard, as USM tallied
four goals in the second period.

The Wildcats scored three goals of those four goals in the span of a
minute and four seconds early in the period.  The first goal came at 1:03.
Junior defenseman Nathan Burke passed the puck along the Arrowhead blue
line to junior defenseman Ashton Wackym.  Wackym fired a low shot toward
the net, and senior Simon Leahy tipped it past Michael.

USM added another goal less than a minute later.  Along the mid-boards in
the Arrowhead end, senior Ian Palin hit an Arrowhead player who was trying
to clear the puck, and the puck slid to Burke at the point.  Burke blasted
a low shot toward the net, and junior Kenny Servis tipped it over
Michael’s shoulder at 1:43.

USM made it 3-0 just 24 seconds later when Leahy intercepted a pass in
center ice, roared into the Arrowhead zone on a breakaway, made a move to
fool Michael, and stuffed the puck into the net at 2:03.

USM scored its fourth goal while on a power play.  Wackym got control of
the puck along the Arrowhead boards as he and his teammates worked it
around the Arrowhead end.  Wackym passed it to Burke on the blue line.
Burke blazed a rising shot inside the far post at 8:41.

The game got chippy and each team had to contend with killing penalties
throughout the remainder of the second period and during parts of the
third.  USM finally scored its final goal late in the final period while
skating four-on-four.  Off a face-off, junior Corey Roadhouse got the puck
on the side-boards in the Arrowhead zone and passed it to senior Jack
Minahan at the point.  Minahan sent it along the line to his defense
partner, senior Zach Hafeman.  Hafeman gunned a low shot that senior Aaron
Storch tipped past Michael at 14:06.

In the game Michael saved 40 of the 45 shots USM fired at him.  Senior Ben
Myers stopped all 18 that the Warhawks could muster as he recorded the
shut out.

Arrowhead is now 7-9-1.  USM’s record is 9-5-2.  The Wildcats play
Marquette at 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday at the Eble Ice Arena in Brookfield.
