Three special teams goals the difference

The Eau Claire North Huskies put in a half day at school on Friday then got on the bus for a three hour trip down to Eble Park in Brookfield to face the Marquette Hilltoppers.

Buslegs? Nope.

North roared out to a 5-0 lead then held off Marquette for a 5-3 win.

North showed their skill level early when tallying on two consecutive power plays. Ryan Venne got it all started when he was able to knock home the puck on the back post top shelf.

Sixty-one seconds later on another power play, Zac Stange made quick work when he scored five seconds into another power play. Stange got off a shot after a faceoff in the offensive zone and fired a shot past Zach Schmidt thru bodies for the 2-0 lead after one period.

The Huskies outshot Marquette 15-1 in the period.

Early in the second period North was gonna be on the penalty kill. But being down a man was still no problem as they scored a shorthanded goal. Carson Lemanski was able to tip a shot which went 5 hole and a 3-0 lead.

North was able to kill off the penalty but pretty much put things out of reach with two goals in 16 seconds. First Zach Urdahl was able to go uncovered on the back post. Cal Fadness found him all alone for an easy tap in goal. Then after the faceoff with the puck in the Marquette end, Jacob Schafter jumped on a turnover in the slot and made it 5-0 Huskies, which prompted Marquette to use their time out.

Marquette was able to get on the board late in the period. William Sweeney scored on a wrister from the right circle for a 5-1 deficit after two periods.

Marquette got some life on that goal to carry into the third period. With over 12 minutes left it became 5-2, when Jacob Armbruster tipped a shot past North goalie Jacob Storms. North did get a couple power plays but couldn't tally.

William Sweeney gave the Hilltoppers some hope when he scored his second goal of the game. With 2:49 left he scored on a backhand shot on the ice by the crease and the puck snuck thru for then a 5-3 game with plenty of time left. With their goalie out of the net they spent time in the Husky zone but could get no closer and North had a 5-3 win.

Storms was able to finish with 13 saves while Schmidt stopped 25 shots. Sweeney had a hand in all three Marquette goals with an assist on Armbruster's goal. North's Lemanski had a goal and two assists in the game.
