Four second period goals give Antigo needed cushion

The Antigo Red Robins scored four times in the second period and then held on to beat the Somerset Spartans 4-3 on Friday night in front of an Antigo Hockey Days crowd at the Langlade County Ice Arena.

The Robins controlled much of the first period, but were unable to put any pucks behind Somerset goalie Adam Larson, who was credited with 14 saves in the frame. Antigo’s Ben Bartletti stopped all six shots he faced in the first.

Around a minute and a half into the second period, Jack Shinners fired a shot on net from the right point that was stopped by Larson. Garret Held and CJ Levis were parked in front of the Spartans net and proceeded to fight for the rebound. They got several chances, before Held finally put a shot behind Larson for a 1-0 Robin lead.

A few minutes later, Tyler Husnick padded Antigo’s lead with a pair of rebound goal. The first one came off of a shot from the left point by Andrew Turunen, and the other came on a two-on-two rush with Luke Berner. Berner fired a shot from the left circle which rebounded off Larson to Husnick on the right side in front of an open net.

Somerset was able to close the gap late in the period with a power play goal from Jake Heyer, who roofed a shot over Bartletti from the bottom of the right face-off circle.

But the Robins answered right back with 46 seconds left in the period. Shinners made a long cross-ice pass to Isaac Wickersheim just outside the Spartans blue line. Wick skated in on the right side and fired a wrist shot that just scraped the inside of the post as it entered the net.

Robins 4, Somerset 1 after 2. Saves in period, 16 for Larson and 7 for Bartletti.

The Spartans mounted a comeback in the third period. Austin Larson scored a power play goal on a slapshot through traffic from the left point after taking a pass from Wilson Gauper. Eli Tuttle slammed home a rebound off a shot by Heyer with 14 second left to cut the lead to one, but the Robins were able to kill off the remaining time to secure the win.

Adam Larson ended the game with 37 saves, while Ben Bartletti stopped 27.

Somerset returns home to play new Richmond on Tuesday. The Robins continue their Hockey Days festivities by hosting Chippewa Falls on Saturday.
