Kobs' 4 goals leads the way

After Thursday nights win over Madison Memorial, Janesviller winger Kyler Kobs was asked about the last time he remembers scoring 4 goals in a game. "I think maybe peewees or bantams", he  replied with a smile.

Kobs had four goals, and the Bluebirds needed all of them, in a 5-3 win over Madison Memorial in a Big Eight Conference game in Janesville. The win helped the Birds get back to .500 on the season as they have now won 4 of their last 5 games.

Janesville got the scoring started with a goal by, you guessed it, Kyler Kobs, who got the puck past Memorial goalie Ryan Kenny on a backhander to give Janesville a 1-0 lead just past 5 minutes in.

But Memorial was quick to answer.

Ryan Backalew scored on a power play to tie the game, and gave Memorial the lead late in the first period on a major penalty power play giving the Spartans a 2-1 lead after the first period.

But in the second period the game changed fast. Kobs scored his second goal just over a minute into the period and completed the hat trick three minutes later.

Janesville kept up the pressure but couldn't tally again until late in the period. Ty Perkins got the puck with speed down the left side, cut around the defense and scored with 42 second left in the period to take a 4-2 lead into second intermission.

Janesville outshot the Spartans 18-3, with Kenny coming up big on a number of occasions.

Memorial got back within 1 goal in the third period. With 9 minutes left. Memorials Brandon Schaefer was able to pick up a bouncing puck behind the defense and scored on a shot past Janesville goalie Jack Bostadt.

The game went back and forth the rest of the way but finally Kobs for the final time got an empty net goal for the 5-3 win.

"The guys have been working hard in practice, and when we are 5 aside I thought we played very well", said Janesville Coach John Mauermann.

"The second period was our best period we played the whole season".

Memorial goalie Ryan Kenny ended the night with 34 saves, while Jack Bostadt finished with 14 stops. Janesville wing Baily Aegerter also had a great game tallying 3 assists in the game.
