Comets blaze past Mosinee in Community Parks opener

Five players score multiple points in 8-3 win


Waupaca scored four times in the final period to pull away from Great Northern Conference rival Mosinee 8-3 Friday evening in the opening game of the Community Parks Hockey Classic at KB Willett Arena in Stevens Point.

The teams alternated goals in the first period, resulting in a 2-1 Waupaca lead.

Bruce Sternweis scored seven minutes in for an early 1-0 Waupaca lead before Zeth Pyan tied the game less than two minutes later.

Two minutes later, Max Menzies increased the lead to 2-1 in favor of Waupaca.

Shots were 13-8 in favor of Waupaca in the period.

The alternate scoring continued in the middle period.

Max Beste scored three minutes in for Mosinee to tie the game at two before Dawson Bohm gave the Comets a 3-2 lead with 11:26 left in the period.

Michael Alfonso tallied for Mosinee with 4:37 left to knot the contest at three. The Indians almost gained the lead a minute later, but the puck that ended up in the net was ruled to have been kicked in.

Just before the period ended, Nickolas Grams scored from the top of the right circle for Waupaca to give them a 4-3 lead after 34 minutes.

Shots were 11-8 in favor of Waupaca in the period.

The final period was all Waupaca as Eugene Pliska, Hunter Smith, Menzies, and Cody Rasmussen scored to account for the 8-3 final.

Shots were 16-7 in the period, Waupaca.

Pliska had three assists for Waupaca, while Smith and Jack Menzies each added a pair of helpers.

Brett Berens stopped 20 shots while earning the win. Zach Bednar (25) and Stanford Swid (7) combined for 32 saves for Mosinee.

Waupaca (8-4, 3-2 GNC) will face SPASH at 7pm Saturday for the Community Parks title. Mosinee (5-6, 2-2 GNC) will take on University School at 5pm.
