Waukesha defeats Edgewood 4-1

Ian Malcolmson scored twice and added a pair of assists in leading the Waukesha Wings to a 4-1 victory in the championship game of the Showdown in Titletown held at the Cornerstone Community Center.

But it was more than just the star senior forward that led to the win.

Wyatt Wilderman had a goal and a helper, and goalie Garrett Larsen stopped 25 of 26 shots in leading the squad to victory.

The game had a crazy beginning, as Edgewood goalie Shane Ryan was charged with a five minute major for head contact and then a teammate was whistled for a roughing penalty, giving Waukesha a 5-on-3 early in the opening stanza.

The minor infraction expired and the major penalty was nearing its end when Malcolmson grabbed a pass from Wilderman and set sail down the left side. His early shot from the top of the left circle might have surprised relief netminder Ben Cegelski as Waukesha grabbed the 1-0 lead in the middle of the period.

The period ended with that 1-0 lead, as Larsen stopped all eight shots fired at him, and Ryan (5) and Cegelski (5) made a total of 10 saves in the period.

Wilderman scored with 1:30 gone in the middle period with an assist from Malcolmson to give the Wings a two-goal lead.

Ryan made a nice save a minute later on a Joziah Dietrich breakaway to keep the score at 2-0.

Edgewood had an opportunity ten minutes later when Larsen lost his CCM goalie stick and had to play with no lumber or a skater stick for ten seconds before the puck was cleared out of the zone.

The Wings and the Crusaders battled for the remainder of the period, but no further change in the score occurred as Waukesha held a two-goal lead heading into the final period.

Larsen stopped 10 shots, while Ryan made nine saves in the period.

WiPH Game Summaries

Malcolmson made it 3-0 just over a minute into the final 17 minutes of play when he grabbed a loose puck in the NZ and came down the middle, sliding a shot through the pads of the Edgewood goalie.

Two minutes later, Ryan did make a nice right pad save of a Malcolmson spinning shot from the bottom of the right circle.

Then on the other end, Larsen was out of position after making a save at the top of the crease only to have the Edgewood shot bounce off the right post.

Malcolmson showed his work ethic as Waukesha grabbed a 4-0 lead in the middle of the period.

Working behind the net, he skated with the biscuit from left to right and as he came around the net, slipped a pass to Ben Sorge on the opposite side, and the sophomore did not fail in his scoring attempt. Griff Nickerson also earned a helper on the play.

After the teams exchanged power play chances, Edgewood broke up the shutout with just under two minutes left.

Hunter Stracka grabbed a pass from Jack Royer and fired a shot from the top of the left circle that beat the Waukesha goalie to make it 4-1 with an additional assist to Jacob Moore.

Larsen stopped seven shots in the final period for a game total of 25, while Ryan stopped six to end with 20 total.

The Wings won their eighth straight game to improve to 11-1. Edgewood slipped to 4-6-1 on the year.
