SPASH uses three early goals in 7-1 victory

The SPASH Panthers got production from their oldsters and their youngsters Tuesday night at the KB Willett Arena against long-time rival Northland Pines in a 7-1 victory in the Mayo Clinic Sports Medicine Game of the Week.

The old-timers included seniors Zane Fisher (1g-2a), Jacob Beilke (1g-1a), Chase Miller (1g), and goalie Phil (P-Treb) Trzebiatowski (13 saves), while the kids were led by sophomore Cole Caufield (2g-1a), freshman Barrett Brooks (2a), and freshman Dayne Hoyord (1g).

The Panthers got off to a quick lead when Fisher grabbed a loose puck in the slot and zipped it past Pines netminder Ethan Polich just 1:36 into the contest.

Caufield doubled the lead a few minutes later when he gathered a pass at his blue line and set sail for the other end. He veered to the top of the right circle and launched a shot that ended up in the back of the net at the 7:50 mark, with an assist to Brooks.

Hoyord teamed up with Caufield with just over four minutes left in the period on a nice give-n-go. Caufield started with the puck along the right side wall and passed it to Hoyord while streaking toward the slot. Hoyord slid it across to Caufield, who moved across the slot. When the goalie followed the sophomore star, Caufield did a 180 and slid a pass back to Hoyord, who flipped the puck into a mostly-empty net to make it 3-0.

Northland Pines cut the lead to 3-1 less than two minutes later. Freshman Gunnar Schiffmann ripped a shot from the slot that pinged off the left post and into the net past the Panther goalie to cut the lead to two.

That's how the period ended, with Trzebiatowski stopping three shots and Polich ending with 12 saves.

SPASH got an early goal in the middle period to give them a three-goal lead but couldn't capitalize on three power plays later to increase the advantage.

Chase Miller banged in a rebound from the low right side to make it 4-1, with helpers to Fisher and Jacob Beilke less than two minutes in.

Despite a combined six penalties, no further scoring occurred. Polich had 15 saves in the period, while Trzebiatowski kept four pucks out of the net.

Pines had a chance early in the final period, but solid goaltending negated the threat. The Eagles skated toward the west end of the rink on a 3-on-1 bust-out, but Trzebiatowski slid to his right and said 'nay, nay' to the scoring opportunity.

Just over a minute later, Jacob Beilke ended up with the puck behind the Pines defense and scored from the right side, with an assist to Fisher to make it 5-1.

Caufield tallied on a power play with under five minutes left and Carter Smigaj pounded home a rebound of a Treyton Zinda shot to account for the final scoring with 1:37 left. Brooks, and Devon Blaes received additional helpers on the pair of scores.

Trzebiatowski stopped six shots to end with 13, while a much busier Polich ended with 13 and a game total of 40.

Pines dropped to 5-2, ending a win streak of five games. SPASH improved to 8-1 on the year.
