Warriors tally five goals in the second

WESTON - The Warriors have dominated the Marathon Cup tournament over the past decade.

That run didn’t come to an end Saturday at Greenheck Field House.

Wausau West scored five goals in the second period to down D.C. Everest 6-1 in the Marathon Cup championship game. The Warriors won the four-team tournament championship for the 10th straight year. Mosinee rallied in the third period to down Merrill/Wausau East 5-2 in the consolation game.

Max and Sam Techel both had a goal and an assist as West completed a dominant run through the weekend tournament in which the Warriors outscored their two opponents by a combined 13-1.

The Warriors current Cup winning streak started after the Evergreens won the tournament championship in 2006. This was the second straight year West has downed DCE in the title matchup.

“I guess it’s just ours and we don’t want to give it up,” said West senior defenseman Kellen Tharaldson, who had an assist on the Warriors fourth goal of the night. “It’s fun to win it every year.”
