Coach Pete Susens earns 600th HS victory

The Central Wisconsin Storm played its usual stifling defense, holding University School of Milwaukee to nine shots in a 3-1 victory in the second game of the Gobbler Cup in Mosinee Friday afternoon.

It took the Storm five minutes to score their first goal. Katelynn Schilling skated across the slot from right to left and snuck a shot past USM goalie Marie Dedert at the 5:05 mark for an early 1-0 lead. Katelyn Ramthun earned a helper on the play.

The Wildcats scored on a power play with less than a minute left in the period to tie the contest.

Already down one player, the Storm was in the process of going two players down as an official raised his arm for a penalty call. Before the whistle could blow, Gaby Turer beat CWS goalie Chloe Westberg from the right dot to change the score to 1-1. Hannah Neudorfer and Hannah Gold were helpful on the score.

Jamie Hendrickson was called for roughing after the score, but Claire Ali's penalty for USM with one second left made it 4-on-4. The Storm outshot USM 14-2 in the period.

CWS grabbed a 2-1 lead just over four minutes into the middle period.

Emelia Edmondson gathered up the puck in the right corner and skated into the slot before firing a shot through traffic that beat the USM goalkeeper high on the glove side. Ramthun earned her second assist on the play.

That's how the period ended, with Central Wisconsin outshooting USM 10-2.

The final period had more scuffling than scoring as a combined 26 minutes of penalties were called.

Maggie Plaza scored from the slot area to make it 3-1 with 6:46 left, with an assist to Emma Kysely.

The teams were whistled for a five major for head contact, a matching roughing minor, and a 5-and-10 for a CFB. Neither team scored, even though Dedert came off with 10 seconds left for an extra attacker.

WiPH Game Summaries

Lost in the excitement was the fact that the victory was the 600th career high school win for Storm coach Pete Susens. The Superior native won 576 contests with the Wausau West boys team, and now has 24 wins while leading the Storm girls.

Asked what the victory meant to him, Susens shrugged and said "it's just another win."

Typical for the soft-spoken dean of Wisconsin coaches.

Westberg stopped five in the third period to finish with eight stops in the game, while USM's Dedert saved six for a game total of 28.

The Storm improved to 3-0 and will take on Hayward Saturday at 2:30 for the Gobbler Cup title. USM dropped to 0-1-1 and will face ECA for the consolation trophy at noon.
