Westberg earns second shutout of the year for Central WI

Senior Maggie Plaza scored a pair of goals and added an assist and junior Emma Kysely had one tally and two helpers as the Central Wisconsin Storm blanked the visiting Point-Rapids/Marshfield Red Panthers 6-0 at Marathon Park Tuesday evening.

The Storm started the scoring midway through the opening period as Eden Gruber skated into the slot and snuck the puck past the stick of Red Panther goalie Pistol Cowden for the 1-0 lead, with an assist to Allison Stevens.

Just over four minutes later, Emelia Edmondson scored from the left dot for the two-goal lead, with an assist to Katelynn Schilling.

The period ended with that 2-0 lead as the hosts held a 13-3 shot edge.

The middle period was scoreless for most of the 17 minutes as each netminder stopped 2-on-1 rushes in the middle of the stanza. Plaza then took advantage of another odd-man rush, scoring from the slot with 1:20 left to make it 3-0 Storm. Kysely had a helper on the play.

Shots were 13-4 in the period in favor of CWS.

Kysely scored just under two minutes into the final period to give the Storm a 4-0 margin. Plaza helped out on the goal.

Five minutes later, Schilling launched a hard shot from the left circle that beat Cowden to push the advantage to 5-0 in favor of the home squad. With that, Cowden came out in favor of Madi Hall.

Hall was challenged early and stopped a breakaway, but Plaza tallied the final score a couple minutes later on a rebound with five minutes left in the contest to send it to running time. Kysely and Kiley Hahner earned assists on the play.

The Storm (2-0) outshot the guests by a tally of 18-4 in the period.

Chloe Westberg stopped 11 shots for her second blanking of the season, while Cowden (28) and Hall (10) combined for 38 saves for the Red Panthers. The freshman Cowden played well in her Red Panthers debut.

The Storm resumes play on Friday in the Gobbler Cup, entertaining University School in Mosinee. The Red Panthers (0-1) travel to Sauk Prairie to take on the Badger Lightning on Saturday.
