In the second round of the Paul Meyer Tournament at University School, New Trier of Winnetka Illinois defeated University School 5-3 Saturday morning.

USM scored the game’s goal in the first period.  Senior Simon Leahy got control of the puck near the USM blue line and chipped it off the boards.  He sprinted around a Trevian defenseman, collected the puck, skated into the New Trier end and fired a high shot that beat New Trier’s goalie Colby Atkinson on the blocker side.

The Wildcats took their 1-0 lead to the locker room between the first and second period, but New Trier quickly changed the look of the game in the second period.  The Trevians scored their first goal at 2:50 while on a power play.  Robert Acri fed the piuck to Lucas Kolton on the right boards and Kolton directed it along to defenseman Tyler Pecka on the blue line.  Pecka gunned a shot through a crowd in front that USM’s goaltender Ben Myers never saw before it entered the net.

New Trier made it 2-1 just over a minute later.  Acri fired a low shot from the left side boards and Gregory Smart tipped in at 4:01.  Daniel Superina also had an assist on the play.

New Trier went ahead 3-1 while on a power play at at 9:32 Atkinson stopped the puck and passed it to Pecka.  Pecka saw William Westhoff sprinting into center ice and hit him with a stretch pass.  Westhoff went in on a breakaway and deked Myers to score.

New Trier had another breakaway waved off, but before the period ended it was 4-1 New Trier.  John Mathews got the puck on the sideboards in the USM end.  He sent it to Ben Friedman near the left post.  Friedman passed it across the crease to Superina who wrapped it into the USM net at 16:16.

USM successfully killed a 5 minute major penalty at the start of the third period and that gave the team some needed impetus.  Ashton Wackym got the puck in the USM end and sent it to Aaron Storch as Storch exited the zone on the right side.  He skated it into the New Trier end and fired a shot from the circle.  The puck hit Atkinson, flew up and fell over his head and into the net at 5:21.

USM pulled closer late in the third.  Defenseman Nathan Burke fired a shot from the point and Wackym tipped it in at 14:08.

USM pulled Myers from the net while on a power play in the last minute of the game, but Smart got the puck in the New Trier end and iced it into the empty net to seal the victory for New Trier.

In the game, Myers made 34 saves and Atkinson made 17.

With the victory New Trier proceeds to the championship game of the tournament against Fenwick High School of Illinois Saturday at 7:30.  USM is now 1-1.  The Wildcats plays Marquette for third place in the tournament Saturday at 5:15.
