Fondy coach becomes Coaches Association leader

Fond du Lac Goodrich head hockey coach Ryan Sarazin has been named the new president of the Wisconsin Hockey Coaches Association. Sarazin will take over the reins from out-going president Tony Renlund (Oregon), who has served the last three years.

The Houghton, Michigan native and graduate played his collegiate hockey at UW-Superior. Sarazin also played junior hockey in the USHL for Waterloo & Fargo and in the AFHL for Billings. He spent three years as an assistant coach at Superior High School under Jason Kalin before taking the head job at Fond du Lac in 2004.

Under the 32 year-old Sarazin, the Cardinals have made four state tournament appearances, including a state championship in 2007 and a runner-up finish in both 2006 & 2009. He was named Bob Johnson Coach of the Year in 2007.

Sarazin has been a member of the WIAA Coaches Advisory Committee for the past two years and a WHCA board member since 2006.

“I would like to continue working positively with the WIAA and WAHA to better hockey in the state of Wisconsin," said Sarazin this past weekend. “This includes the continued growth of the sport & moving closer to a two division state structure, as well as a focus on putting the best product on the ice for our fans in both regular and post season events. It has been amazing to see high school hockey grow in Wisconsin, and we as an organization (WHCA), we hope to continue to provide a high level of hockey locally for our top athletes in the state.”

The appointment of Sarazin came last weekend at the WHCA Bob Johnson Coaching Symposium in Madison. Speakers for the weekend clinic held at the Kohl Center included Badgers head coaches Mike Eaves & Mark Johnson, MSOE head coach Mark Ostapina, Olympian Jesse Vetter and Badger assistant coaches Jim Snider and Bill Butters.
