Top Wisconsin defenseman doesn't even drive yet

On the surface, Ty Emberson is about as stereotypical an Eau Claire kid as one can find.

He likes to fish with his friends, go tubing down the river, ride his bike all over town — well, that is until May 23 when he will go for his driver’s license — and play a game he loves representing his high school and hometown.

But like a solitary iceberg, there is so much beneath that surface that makes him one of the most sought-after high school hockey players in the country.

The Eau Claire Memorial sophomore was the state’s defenseman of the year, Big Rivers Conference player of the year, first-team all-state and earned a spot on the all-tournament team at the state tournament. Oh, and he took a break late during the season to lead Team USA to a gold medal in the Youth Olympic Games in Lillehammer, Norway.

He also is the Leader-Telegram All-Area boys hockey player of the year.
