Phinney earns Boys tournament MVP nod

AU goalie stops 64 of 66 in state play

Appleton United goalie Dylan Phinney stopped 64 of 66 shots in three contests in the 2016 state tournament and was named the tournament MVP by WiPH staffers and selected media members.

In a 6-0 win over University School in the quarterfinals, Phinney stopped all 15 shots that he faced.

The next day, he made 27 saves in a 4-1 semifinal victory over Eau Claire Memorial.

He saved the best for last, as he stopped 22 of 23 shots in a high-intensity championship game in which United edged Hudson 2-1 to win their first state title.

Phinney finished with a goals against of 0.67 and had a .970 save percentage.

He was joined on the first team by teammates Trenton Bliss, Matthew Gruber, and Lucas McKinnon.

Defensemen Tanner Gornick and Chase Blackmun of Hudson also earned first team status.
