Raiders score twice in each of the first two periods

Hudson scored twice in each of the first two periods and skated to a 4-1 victory over Onalaska in game three on Quarterfinal Thursday.

The Raiders went ahead midway through the first on a sweet pass to the backdoor.

George Nuutinen fired a puck across from the right dot to the backdoor where Carter Schuett converted past goalie Hayes Weiner. Tanner Gornick also had an assist on the play.

Four minutes later, Walter Brose worked a re-direct to perfection as he tipped the shot from Jack Flattum into the net to make it 2-0 with four minutes left.

A few seconds later, Hudson goalie Anthony Howard made a save and was out of position and the goal was wide open, but Gornick made a save for his goalie to stop the play.

To add insult to injury, Howard and Tyler Ebner collided with 24 seconds left, knocking off the goalie's helmet and causing a stoppage in play and a penalty for Ebner.

All was good, as the players tapped each other's pads and nodded, 'it's cool.'

As the period ended at 2-0, saves showed Weiner with six and Howard with four.

Hudson scored twice in 58 seconds early in the second to build the lead to 4-0.

Aaron Squires tapped in a rebound of a shot that appeared to go in with just under twelve minutes left, with an assist to Chase Blackmun.

Then Bradley Jacobson steamed down the right side and slid the puck between the pads of Weiner just before he slid, crashing into the end boards.

The period ended with the four-goal lead. Weiner had nine saves in the period while Howard stopped six pucks.

The final period saw little scoring but lots of excitement.

Howard stoned a pair of breakaways 30 seconds apart in the middle of the period, including one on Ebner. At that point, play was stopped as it appeared Coach Tim Ebner had suffered an injury. He was escorted off the bench, grimacing in obvious pain. It is unknown what injury he suffered.

Onalaska finally broke into the scoring column when Jacob Dirks took a shot from the top of the right circle and the puck bounced off Howard's hands and over his shoulder into the net with 40 seconds left. Parker Tepp had an assist.

The Hilltopper goalie came out with 30 seconds left but Onalaska could not add to their score, dropping a 4-1 decision.

Howard made seven saves for a game total of 17, while Weiner also stopped seven shots for a total of 22.

Onalaska dropped to 24-4 on the year.

Hudson improved to 24-4 and will take on the winner of the Madison Edgewood-Waukesha game.

That contest will take place Friday evening.
