Reichenbacher, Hottmann each score pair in 6-1 win

Grant Reichenbacher and Carter Hottmann each scored twice to lead Madison Edgewood past Middleton 6-1 in the Sectional 6 title game at the Sun Prairie Ice Arena on a seasonably warm Saturday night.

Edgewood—who scored twice in each of the three periods—is making its first trip to the state tournament since 2010.

Reichenbacher scored on a rebound with just over four minutes left in the opening stanza to give Edgewood a 1-0 lead. Hottmann and Blake Richter earned assists on the play.

Just 23 seconds later, Jack Royer notched a goal to make it 2-0 Crusaders, with Bryce Ternus getting credit for a helper on the score.

The period ended with that score, and each goalie having eight saves in the period. Tony Wuesthofen started for Middleton; Mr. Hockey candidate Tommy Mohs was in net for Edgewood.

Middleton cut the lead in half early in the second period.

Casey Harper scored from the low left circle just 1:16 into the period, with an assist going to Jordan Hylbert to make it 2-1.

A couple minutes later, a shot by a Middleton forward went bar-up instead of bar-down and the score stayed 2-1. One minute later, Richter had a chance in the slot but his shot went wide to the right.

Fifteen seconds later, Fred Richards was successful from the slot to make it 3-1, Edgewood. Reichenbacher had an assist on the play.

Hottmann scored from the right dot with just over five minutes remaining to give Edgewood a 4-1 lead, with an assist to Reichenbacher.

The period ended with Mohs making 13 saves for the Crusaders and Wuesthofen stopping three shots for the Cardinals.

WiPH Game Summaries

An apparent Middleton goal was waived off with 2:35 left in the period, and things kinda went sideways after that, with the refs assessing several penalties in the waning minutes of the game.

Middleton had an excellent year, finishing with a 23-4 mark.
