Red Raiders score four in middle stanza to secure victory

Logan Conkey scored twice and added two assists and five other players had multi-point games as second-seeded Wisconsin Rapids eased past #7 Tomah by a score of 7-1 Thursday night at the South Wood County Rec Center in Section 4 playoff action.

Conkey put Rapids on the board three minutes into the contest when he took a pass from behind the net and converted from the slot for the early 1-0 lead. Cody Kohls and Sam Storlie had assists on the play.

Six minutes later, Bailey Pieper scored from the high slot through traffic for Tomah to knot the game at one. Noah Nick earned a helper on the play.

Conkey tallied his second goal three minutes later when he moseyed down the left side of the ice before cutting to his right and sneaking the puck past goalie Brody Pierce to make it 2-1. Tanner Case and Jacob Morman were credited with assists on the play.

That's how the period ended, with Pierce stopping 12 shots for the Timberwolves while Rapids goalie Tanner Reany kept five shots out of the net for the home squad.

Rapids (17-8) scored four times in the middle period to put the game out of reach.

Morman made it 3-1 just over a minute in with his shot from the left point that ended where Grandma keeps her cookies. Conkey and Case had assists.

Kohls scored on a nice back-door play four minutes later, with his shot from the low left side ticking off the left post before ending in the net. Conkey and Storlie had helpers on the play.

Colton Flammini had an unassisted goal in the middle of the period when he grabbed a loose puck and fired a shot from the high slot that resulted in Rapids' fifth goal.

Storlie capped the scoring in the period with just under three minutes left when his shot from the top of the left circle snuck through a narrow space between the right arm and the body of the Tomah goalie. Jared Sawyer had an assist.

Pierce had a busy period, stopping 16 shots fired at him, while Reany stopped all four shots directed at him on the other end.

Sawyer finished the scoring for the evening in the third with 14:28 remaining to send the game to run time. Erik Prochnow and Tyler Blaes had assists on the final score.

Pierce stopped eight shots to finish with 36 saves on the evening for Tomah, who finished the season with a 6-19-1 mark. Reany had three saves and ended with 12 on the night for Rapids.

The Red Raiders will advance to sectional semi-final play, hosting #3 West Salem next Tuesday at the SWC Rec Center.

On the other side of the bracket, #1 Onalaska will meet #5 Aquinas co-op for the right to advance to the sectional final game, which will be held in Onalaska next Saturday.
