Trent Kollock stops 21 shots in winning effort

In a game that featured 31 penalty minutes, a whole lot of banging, and a few missed opportunities, one goal was good enough.

It wasn't a pretty goal, but it counted as 'one' on the scoreboard and that is all it took for Stevens Point Pacelli to advance to the second round of the playoffs with a 1-0 win over Rhinelander Tuesday night at Ice Hawks Arena in Section Three action.

The penalty kill units of both teams shone on this chilly late winter evening in Stevens Point, quashing a combined 11 of 12 power play chances. The only 'blemish' was a Pacelli score late in the middle period.

Late in the first period, Hodag goalie Alex Littleton made a nice glove save on a shot by Daniel Mitch. Just under a minute later, Brandon Kolasa rifled a shot past Pacelli goalie Trent Kollock but the puck bounced off the upper left section of the crossbar for a 'bar-up' into the netting.

The scoreless period ended with Littleton showing eight saves and Kollock four.

Pacelli almost got on the board in the early going of the second when Chris Karch tipped a shot in low from Bradley Maes, but the Hodag netminder corralled it with his gold-and-blue Eagle catching glove.

After matching minors and another pair of penalties did not result in a score, Freddie Wisner and Sam Tjugum teamed up on a back-door chance for Rhinelander, but Kollock slid to his left and made the save to negate that opportunity in the middle of the stanza.

With just under two minutes left in the period and a Hodag in the box, the guests had a shorthanded 2-on-1, but the shot went wide left and was quickly grabbed up by Pacelli, heading up ice the other way.

Twenty seconds later, Mitch was on the ice flat on his back celebrating his rebound goal, which he shoved back through the wickets of the Hodag goalie after the initial shot from the right point was stopped. Richard Zupan was given a helper on the play.

Alex Littleton during a break in the action

Littleton had nine stops in the period, while Kollock had eight as Pacelli skated off holding a tenuous one goal lead with 17 minutes left to be played.

Four minutes into the final period, Matthias Schneider grabbed a loose puck in the slot and fired it at Kollock, only to have the senior goalie make a nice pad save to keep the lead at one.

Less than thirty seconds later, the home team had a golden opportunity after the Hodags' Dylan Roeser was called for an open-ice CFB (no misconduct), but a pair of Pacelli penalties turned the power play the other way, giving the Hodags 55 seconds worth of 4-on-3.

Neither team could convert those and two more Pacelli infractions, even though Rhinelander coach MJ Laggis called a time-out with 3:07 to discuss the situation.

Littleton managed to get off the ice for an extra skater with 13 seconds left, but a couple chances toward the end resulted in a whistle and a faceoff to the right of Kollock with 0.3 seconds left.

The Hodag center won the draw and slapped the puck at the goal, but Kollock sealed the ice and made his 21st save of the game as the horn sounded on a 1-0 Pacelli victory.

Littleton had five saves in the period for a game total of 22, while Kollock turned aside nine shots in the final 17 minutes.

The Hodags end their season with a mark of 9-13-1.

The Pacelli Cardinals will take their 15-8 record to Marathon Park Thursday night for a meeting with top-seeded Wausau West. Game time is 7:15pm.
