Third period rally leads to early overtime win

The Beloit Memorial hockey team came into Saturday's regular season Big Eight conference finale knowing where they would end conference play in the standings.

Janesville came into the game knowing a win means they share second place with Verona. A loss means a tie for third with Sun Prairie.

Beloit also came into the game with a rash of injuries that took their second line completely out for the game.

So the time was right for the Bluebirds to get a nice win and leave Senior Night happy, right ???

Not so fast.

"We came with 3 or 4 guys out with injuries so we told the guys to go hard said Beloit coach Kurt Buchs. "You cant take a shift off against Janesville they are too good of a team and don't take a shift off".
"I give all the credit to the boys".

Beloit left it all on the ice and stunned Janesville with 3 goals in the third period, and won 4-3 in overtime on a Casper Clark goal 11 seconds in.

"We won the faceoff and moved the puck twice with authority and our guy (Clark) finished with authority".

Janesville came out and in the first 19 seconds got on the board on a goal by Ty Perkins who scored on a pass from behind the net by Jack MacDougall.

Shots were very limited for both teams in the first period with 5 shots each.

The second period saw Janesville come out with pressure early on but nothing to show for it but under a minute left in the period Baily Aegerter got a puck by Beloit goalie Taven Santucci (19 saves to go to second intermission up 2-0.

Then Beloit got a little help.

With a shot that was going to go ove the net and off the glass Janesville goalie Jack Bostedt attempted to glove it. The puck tipped off the top of his glove and rolled down into the net.

Janesville did come back shortly after. Defenseman Nick Sitter scored on a shot from the point for a 3-1 lead.

The very same deficit they came back from against Sun Prairie Thursday.

But this time Beloit stayed coming after it., and hit the back of the net on a shot by Riley Jensen. He took a shot from inside the blue line and it made it thru for a 3-2 deficit with just over 5 minutes left.

Beloit kept coming and won a battle down low by the net to tie the game. The puck was looking like it was gonna be froze by the far post by Jack Bostedt. Riley Jensen was there at the same time and was able to get it just under the skate and a tie game with 90 seconds left. Regulation ended at a 3-3 tie before the game winner by Casper Clark 11 seconds in with a shot that beat Bostedt who ended with 11 saves.

Janesville coach John Mauermann believes execution of the game plan was not done nearly enough.

"We had too many individuals on the ice who forgot this is a team game", said Mauermann. "There were certain things we worked on in practice all week but then we don't come out and execute it correctly".

Both teams start playoffs now. Beloit plays Stoughton Tuesday night, while Janesville will host the winner of the KMMO and Monroe winner Thursday.
