After losing to Mosinee in the opening game of the Pines Classic after holding a 3-1 lead going into the third period, Northland Pines was determined to not have a repeat last night. The determination and drive to win was evident as the Eagles picked up a 3-2 win over the Mosinee Indians.

Mosinee found themselves running their penalty kill unit as Dylan Bednar was sent to the box for tripping but Pines capitalized on the opportunity when Ryon Ritzer set up Joe Maillette for the first goal of the night.

Landon Stepan got past defensemen Connor Cox and found the open side of the net as Ethan Polich was anchored on the opposite post. Bryce Graveen was credited with an assist on the play to tie up the score at one goal apiece.

The duo was quick to replicate their actions, taking a 2-1 lead thirty seconds later. Zeth Pyan also contributed to the play and picked up a point for the night. Colton Raymond shot, picked the puck back up and launched the puck from the opposite side of the net to match the score 2-2 to close out the first period.

Colton Raymond’s shot in the second frame appeared to slipped past Zach Bednar but was waived off by the referees, continuing the play of the game. Pines was outshooting Mosinee 19-17 over the duration of the first to periods.

Sammy Spencer and Michael Alfonso were sent to the box for coincidental roughing minors in the beginning of the period before Connor Cox fired the puck at the nest, ricocheting off of the far post and past Bednar to put the Eagles up 3-2.

Pines had a five minute power play after Bryce Graveen delivered an illegal hit to Jacob Czarapata’s head that resulted in stitches after the game for Pines’ junior. The Eagles couldn’t convert on the power play and after Noah Wittkopf was in the penalty box for crosschecking, Mosinee called a timeout.

Mosinee had a good opportunity in the last seconds of the game but Ethan Polich stayed strong in the net for Pines, denying the Indians of a goal. Northland Pines won the game 3-2 over their Great Northern opponents.
