WAUSAU - Sam Medo scored two goals and assisted on another to help the Stevens Point Area Senior High boys hockey team upset top-ranked Wausau West 4-2 Thursday at Marathon Park.
The loss was the Warriors first in the Wisconsin Valley Conference this season.
After Hunter Ricklefs scored the game’s first goal at the 10:56 mark of the first period, Medo answered with a shorthanded goal just over three minutes later to tie the game up.
Grant Czaikowski scored the lone goal in the second period before Medo scored at the 1:43 mark of the third to give the Panthers, who received votes in the state poll this week, a two-goal advantage.
Christian Bardarson scored a wrap-around goal less than two minutes later to bring West to within a goal.
Cole Caufield then capped the upset win for the Panthers with a shorthanded empty net goal at the 15:43 mark of the final period.
