Verona boys hockey scored three third period goals Wednesday, Dec. 30 in the final round of the Rochester Kiwanis tournament to defeat host Rochester Lourdes 4-1 victory inside the Graham Arena.

Junior Jake Keyes’ power-play goal 9 minutes into the second period helped break a scoreless draught. But the lead would be short-lived as Rochester tied the game 11 minutes into the third period.

Senior Josh Novotny answered with the game-winner for Verona one minute later before juniors Jack Anderson and Braeden Schindler tacked on empty-net goals over the final minute-and-a-half to cement the victory.

Senior goaltender Alex Jones stopped 21 of 22 shots on goal, while Adam Renn turned aside 16 of 18 for Rochester.

Verona improved to 8-5-1 overall with the victory. The Wildcats now host second-ranked Middleton (13-0-0) at 7 p.m. Saturday in a crucial early-season Big Eight showdown.

Both teams are undefeated at 6-0-0 in conference.

Defenseman Davis Buns leads Middleton with 24 points, though teammates Casey Harper (22), Colin Butler (22) and Nolan Kouba (20) have all posted at least 20 points.
