Stars shine on Senior Day

The Superior Spartans traveled to Eau Claire to take on the ECA Stars for the WiPH Game of the Week.  It was a second meeting of the season for the two teams.  The Stars won the opening game of the season against the Spartans in Superior 8 to 4.  It was a special game for the Stars as it was 'Senior Day'.

The Spartans Devyn Moss was accessed a penalty for holding at 10:01 of the first period.  The Stars were able to capitalize on the power play 15 seconds later as Dani Mestelle scored the power play goal assisted by Abigail Stow and Charlotte Akervik.  Eau Claire-Altoona increased their lead to two as the Stars took advantage of a 2-on-1 breakaway.  Stow passed the puck back to Ava Kison.  Kison skated in and scored with 1:37 remaining in the period.  The Spartans' Rose Ion went to the sin bin with 38 seconds left in the first for tripping.  Miranda Bestul finished the period with 8 saves for ECA, while Superior's Autumn Siers had 16 saves.

The Stars' Charlotte Akervik went to the penalty box for hooking 48 seconds into the second period.  ECA dumped the puck in deep just as their penalty expired, Abigail Stow kept the pressure on the puck.  She gained possession of it along the boards and skated to the high slot where she released her wrist shot that found the way into the net giving the Stars a 3-0 lead.  Superior was able to eliminate the goose egg, when Emma Peterson followed her own shot and put the rebound into the net at 10:34 of the second period. The Stars brought their lead back to 3, when Brooklynn Arbs redirected Makayla Stow's shot into the goal at 13:26 of the second.  Siers had 11 saves in the second period and Bestul had 7 saves.

The Spartans were called for tripping 56 seconds into the third period.  The Stars capitalized on it 19 second later as Brooklynn Arbs scored her second goal of the game with an assist from Abigail Stow.  Dani Mestelle picked up her second goal at 14:40 of the third with an assist from Alison Pankratz to convert another power play opportunity for the Stars. Bestul finished the game with 21 saves after collecting 6 in the third.  Siers stopped the puck 9 times in the third for a total of 36.

Stars win 6-1.
