First time champ in third-year tourney

The finals of the Waupun 3rd Annual Holiday tournament had the same two teams returning to face each other.  Wariors versus Warriors.  This time a different result as Waupun was able to defeat Waunakee 7-2.

Waunakee was able to win its pool by defeating Oregon 4-0 and Beaver Dam 10-0.  The high powered Waunakee offense was in full swing in pool play with the first line of Jacob Thousand, Blake Ripley, and Parker Elvy continued to add to their state leading goals and assists.  Goalie Jacques Semandel arose to the occasion with the two shut outs propelling Waunakee to the finals.

Waupun was also able to dominate it's pool in advancing to the finals.  Waupun began with a 7-1 win over Green Bay United and 6-3 win over Dubuque, IA Devils.  Brady Beekman and Colin Holz continued to drive the offense while all of the Sophomore defensemen Nate Brown, Caleb Baxter, Carson Schramm, and Cole Kamphuis protected the defensive zone first for goalie Caleb Sauer in game 1 and Austin Taylor in Game 2.

The anticipated offensive match up between the two Warriors teams took place in front of a jam packed crowd at the Waupun Community Center and was a repeat of last year's finals match up won by Waunakee.  However, this time Waupun was ready.  Waupun opened up the first period scoring 4 goals while Waunakee was held scoreless.  Senior Jordan Foster opened up the scoring with just a 1:53 in the first followed by 2 goals by Beekman and 1 by Holz.  Sauer and the young defense were solid pitching a shut out in the first period.

Waunakee was able to bounce back right away in the second period.  Thousand and Ripley each put one past Sauer in the second period to close the gap to 4-2.  Before the period was over, Holz put another goal past Semandel to give Waupun a 5-2 lead.

Waupun never looked back.  In the 3rd, Beekman and Holz each were able to score earning the Hat Tricks for each of the first line forwards from Waupun.  The defense held on and earned another period shut out giving Waupun it's first title in it's own Holiday tournament.  Semandel and Sauer each faced 40 shots during the Championship game.

Green Bay United was able to defeat Beaver Dam 4-0 in the consolation finals.  Oregon in a thrilling 3rd place match defeated the Devils 2-1 in OT.

Waupun is now 10-2 and will be facing the most challenging part of their schedule in the month of January with upcoming games with Badgerland powerhouse teams Neenah and Appleton as well as a non-conference game with DePere.
