Storm wear out the ice in Waupaca zone

The Central Wisconsin Storm spent most of the game circling around the Waupaca zone firing shots at goalie Cassie Rasmussen Tuesday night on their way to a 6-2 in in our girls’ game of the week at Marathon Park.

Most of the shots never made it to the net, being blocked by the fearless Waupaca defenders who formed a wall in front of Rasmussen. The shots that did get through were quickly cleared, not allowing rebound chances for the Storm attackers.

Waupaca scored first when Markie Ash took off out of her own zone between the defenders and chased down a long pass from Kylie Hiddemen and skated in on Storm goalie Chloe Westberg. Ash put a hard wrist shot over Westberg’s glove-side shoulder just over a minute and a half into the game.

That lead would hold up for six minutes until the Storm erupted for three quick goals in just over a two minute span. Katelyn Ramthun started the scoring when she took a pass from Emily Bauer in the low slot and hammered the puck past Rasmussen.

That pass, shoot, score attack worked two more times in the first. Teagan Tretter put a puck just inside the right post off a pass from Michaela Zingler. Then Katelyn Schilling took a pass from Emelia (not Emily) Edmondson to make it 3-1 Storm with just over seven minutes left in the first.

The Storm out-shot Waupaca 17-2 in the first period, and again in the second period, but that frame went scoreless. The Storm replaced Westberg with Athena Kayler halfway through the second.

Central Wisconsin increased their lead to 4-1 just a minute and a half into the third when Kenna Bailey slammed home a rebound of Samantha Brown’s shot.

A high sticking penalty on the Storm followed by the rarely called Unsportsmanlike Conduct penalty for spraying the goalie gave Waupaca a 5 on 3 advantage. They wasted little time before Anna Ryder put the puck behind Kayler after a brief scrum in front of the Storm net.

The Storm got goals from Ramthun and Zingler to round out the scoring and make the final margin 6-2.

Rasmussen stopped a total of 48 of the 54 shots she faced, while Westberg/Kayler stopped 5 of 7.
