Warriors come back with three goals in five minute span to win

Wausau West coach B.J. Brandt had a worried look on his face before Tuesday night's game with Stevens Point Area Senior High.

He worried that his players--who had no school Tuesday--would be thrown off their normal game day routine.

Just 41 seconds into the game, SPASH took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Grant Czaikowski on a shot from the right point through traffic to further Brandt's indigestion along.

That early score woke up the Warriors, who showed game of their own by scoring the next three goals in a span of 4:26 to take a 3-1 lead en route to a 6-3 victory in the WiPH Boys Game of the Week at the K.B. Willett Arena.

Six minutes into the period, West's Cale Bowman tied the game when he grabbed a loose puck and skated to the bottom of the left circle and fired a shot off the skate of a SPASH defender and into the net.

Just over three minutes later, Hunter Ricklefs snapped a shot from the left dot that beat SPASH goalie Phil Trzebiatowski high on the glove side for a 2-1 lead. Nick Techel and Josh Bohlin earned assists on the play.

West grabbed a 3-1 lead moments later on a power play goal.

Christian Bardarson ripped a shot from the right dot that snuck inside the upper right-hand corner of the net to give West a two-goal lead. Zach Pearson and Bohlin each were given helpers on the play.

Then it was the home team's turn to score on the man-advantage.

Brock Caufield saw an opening from his spot on the left side and whipped a hard pass toward Czaikowski, who was camped on the backdoor. One quick stick flick later, the puck tickled the twine and the Panthers had cut the lead to 3-2. Cole Caufield also had an assist on the play.

But that was as close as SPASH would get and as the period came to a close, West held a huge 15-6 shot edge over the hosts.

WiPH Game Summaries

Bowman scored again early in the middle period to increase the lead back to two when he scored from the slot area just under two minutes in, with help from Max Zingler.

West increased the lead to 5-2 on a power play goal with three minutes left in the period. Pearson scored through heavy traffic on assists from Jacob Evans and Bohlin, who earned his third playmaker of the year. Bohlin leads the team in scoring with 16 points (3g-13a).

The period ended with a 5-2 score and showed that West once again held the shot edge, this time by 16-3.

The third period was scoreless until less than a minute left.

Trzebiatowski came out for an extra skater after a SPASH time-out with 3:47 left, with Coach Brandon Busse borrowing a page from the Pete Susens playbook that describes tactics while down three goals late in the game.

It worked, kind of, when West took a penalty and gave the Panthers a 6-on-4 with just under two minutes left. After a flurry of action in front of West goalie Jacob Warnke, Cole Caufield snuck a rebound into the net with an assist going to Sam Medo to make it 5-3 with 16 seconds left in regulation.

Techel sealed the deal with his empty net goal as the clock showed three seconds left. Ricklefs earned the assist on the final scoring play.

The final period showed SPASH with a 16-10 shot edge.

Both goalies played solid, bordering on excellent at times, with each stopping at least two breakaway opportunities.

Warnke earned the win for West while making 22 saves, and Trzebiatowski had the busier night, stopping 35 pucks shot at him.

West improved to 9-0-1 (4-0 WVC), while SPASH dropped to 5-3 (1-2 WVC).
