Face off for championship on Saturday

Wausau West over Mosinee

The Wausau West Warriors scored five times in the second period on their way to an 8 – 2 win in the first game of the 2015 Marathon Cup over the Mosinee Indians on Thursday night.

Wausau West wasted little time getting on the board. Cale Bowman put a shot on net that was stopped by Mosinee goalie Zach Bednar, but Hunter Ricklefs was right there to put in the rebound just 1:51 into the game.

Mosinee tied it up with a power play goal by Michael Alfonso set up with a nice pass from Landon Stepan.

The score stayed tied until late in the period when the Warrior entered the Indians' zone. Mich Techel carried the puck in and dropped a pass to Max Techel, who put a hard shot toward the net. Max Zingler deflected the shot at the top of the crease and past Bednar with 1:23 left in the first.

Mosinee again used the man advantage to tie it up with but 14 ticks left in the first. On the power play, the Indians got the puck to the net. After a brief scramble in front, the puck bounced out to the right where Landon Stepan was waiting for it, and he put it in behind West goalie Jacob Warnke.

Wausau outshot Mosinee 15-6 in the first, but the scoring was even at two each.

The second period was another story. The Warriors again controlled play and outshot the Indians 23-6. But in the second, West put 5 of those shots in the net and Mosinee never recovered. Kellen Tharaldson added another goal at 6:02 in the third period to put the game into running time.

Warnke stopped 11 of 13 shots on the night for West, and Bednar blocked 40 of 48 for Mosinee.

DC Everest over Wausau East

The DC Everest Evergreens scored five times in the first period and cruised to a 6-0 win over the Wausau East Lumberjacks in the second game on Thursday night.

Mathew Janke opened the scoring with a shot-handed goal on a top-shelf wrist shot from the right faceoff circle that beat East goalie Austin Jensen at 2:40 in the opening period.

DC Everest was awarded a second goal just a minute and a half later the J. J. Berdal clanked a shot off of the crossbar that the referee thought went into the net. The Evergreens added a legitimate goal at 5:55 when Ben Weller scored on a wrap-around to make it 3-0.

Seth Jaglinski scored the final two goals in the first period. The first came on a one-timer from the top of the slot off of a nice pass by Janke down by the goal line. The other goal came on another Wausau East power play.

Jensen stopped 13 of the 19 shots he faced in the first period, while at the other end of the ice Michael Janke stopped the only three shots he saw in the first.

The shots on goal were the same in the second period, but this time, only one of them got past a goaltender. Mathew Janke scored the Evergreens' third shorty of the night to put the game into running time at 11:48 in the period.

Jensen ended the night with 39 saves on 45 shots, while Janke stopped all 14 that he saw.

DC Everest will face off against Wausau West for the Marathon Cup championship at 7:30 Saturday night.
