Four goal first period enough for road win.

The Greendale Ice Force used a big first period and some timely defensive play in the third period to knock off the host Oregon Panthers 5-2 Tuesday night. The game looked like a track meet early on as both teams raced up and down the ice with six goals scored between the teams in the first period.

"I told the guys after the first period the first team to ten wins", said Ice Force Coach John Kennedy. "The game did settle itself down and we had to take care of our defensive zone, and we had some pretty nice chances".

"I didn't think it would stay at that pace the entire time ".

The Ice Force scored first in the game when Captain Jeff Schultz let a mid slot wrister fly and beat Oregon goalie Jacob Ayers. But Oregon came right back and defenseman Lucas Hefty evened the game up at 1-1 with just over seven minutes gone in the first period.

The Panthers did take the lead briefly on a turnover in the Greendale end. Dylan Ziomek scored unassisted on Ice Force goalie Owen Lemke to give Oregon the 2-1 lead.

The lead lasted just over two minutes when Oregon coughed up the puck in their zone and Brandon Peterson tallied for a 2-2 tie.

Finally Greendale took the lead for good on a goal by Nate McComb, and finished the first period with a goal by Matt Berther, who scored when a shot rang off the back glass and a scramble in the Oregon zone ensued before Berther scored.

"We got caught, their forwards being fast and our defense pinching at the wrong time", said Oregon Coach Mike Jochmann. "They had some good shooters and those guys buried the puck well".

The second period saw the Ice Force spending a lot of time in the Oregon zone but nothing to show for it, and tacked on a late goal in the third period by Kyle Mahoney on the power play. Oregon worked hard to get back in the game but could never get closer than 4-2 before the late goal. Both goalies settled down after period 1. Oregon goalie Jacob Ayers finished with 26 saves, while Ice Force goalie Owen Lemke had 29.

Ice Force forwards Jeff Schultz finished with a goal and two assists, and Brandon Peterson had a goal and an assist.
