Hearts were beating as the clock wound down during the Northland Pines boys’ hockey game in Waupaca Friday night. The game was scoreless going into the third period despite the Eagles outshooting Waupaca 26-7.

The Eagles had several opportunities in the first two periods but just couldn’t get the puck past Walker Smith. With just over seven minutes left to play in the game, Connor Cox ripped the puck from the blue line before Bobby Schilling fired the puck to the net and Joe Maillette tipped it in, finally breaking the scoring barrier.

Just eight seconds later, the Eagles were once again celebrating a goal. Jack Rhode took the puck from the faceoff and went bar-down to score the second goal of the night for the visiting team. Tyler Hunt was set up on a great play in front of the net but was waived off by the referees in the last minutes, leaving the score at two goals for Pines.

Waupaca’s netminder Walker Smith had an incredible night, saving 34 of the 36 shots he faced. Ethan Polich recorded his second shut out in a row, stopping all 9 shots against him. Next up for the Eagles are two home games against SPASH on December 8th and Rhinelander December 10th.
