Pucks were flying in the historic ERRA Dome as the Northland Pines Eagles hosted the Tomahawk Hatchets to open their Great Northern Conference play last night. The teams played aggressive and determined the entire game that ended with a 6-0 victory in favor of the Eagles.

Pines’ goaltender Ethan Polich recorded his first shutout after saving all 9 of the shots he faced (4-3-2) throughout the game. Tomahawk’s Daniel Hanke faced 52 shots (14-17-19).

The Eagles played fast and furiously to start the game as they scored four goals in the first period, three within four minutes of each other. Freshman Jack Rhode started the game by scoring two and a half minutes in after a rush pass from line-mate Tyler Hunt followed by Sammy Spencer tipping in the puck past Hanke’s left side off of a pass from defensive partner Connor Cox.

Nick Dean rushed the puck up the ice and passed the puck over to Colton Raymond who found Noah Wittkopf open on the right side of the net to put the Eagles up 3-0. Jack Rhode drew a slashing penalty and just twelve seconds into the penalty, Ryon Ritzer scored a shorthanded goal and Nick Dean picked up an assist.

Northland Pines tallied another goal at the start of the second period to extend their lead 5-0 as Colton Raymond fired the puck to Nick Dean for the fifth goal of the night. The two teams picked it up and started playing more aggressive for the remainder of the period and into the third and final period of the game.

Comfortable with their lead, the home team started to sub in a few of their varsity reserve players that had suited up for the varsity game to get them more varsity experience. Tomahawk was assessed six penalties during the duration of the third period.

The top line of Dean, Raymond and Wittkopf picked up points on the last goal of the game with just 8 seconds left to play. Raymond fired the puck bar down to end the game at 6-0 and allowed the Eagles to open up their Great Northern Conference play with a win and post a 2-0-0 record to start their season.
