Waunakee Scores Early and Often For Opening Night Win

Warriors Use Speed To Defeat Jags

 

 

The Waunakee Warriors and Ashwaubenon Jaguars met up Saturday night in Waunakee to open a new season.

The Warriors got their season going quickly and were on the board 46 seconds in when after working hard in the offensive zone. Jaguars goalie Jonathan Destiche was under siege and a loose puck came out in front of him and Blake Ripley got their first goal of the night.

The Warriors continued their scoring ways with over twelve minutes left in the first period they got 2 goals in 10 seconds. Justin Kakuska had a faceoff won back to him and wristed a shot past Destiche for a 2-0 lead and scored 10 seconds later for a 3-0 lead.

Waunakee continued the scoring ways with Jeremy Werner scored from the low circle on a scramble by the net. The Jags were able to get one of the goals back. With Waunakee a man down they tallied 8 seconds into the advantage for a 4-1 deficit. In the last few seconds of the period Waunakee was scrambling around the Jags net and were able to score in the final second on a goal by Jacob Thousand for a 4-1 lead after 1 period.
 
The Warriors hit 3 pipes solid in that period but only up by 3 after the first period. Shots showed Destiche with 15 saves and Waunakee goalie Jacques Semandel stopping all 4 pucks.

The second period saw a new netminder for Aswaubenon but Waunakee still were able to score three straight goals. David Westrich got the first one and Jacob Thousand getting the next two to complete a hat trick.

Ashwaubenon continued to keep getting the offense going and Samuel Marklew knocked one home from the back post for a 7-2 deficit after the second period.

Things started to get interesting in the third period.

With Waunakee's top line done for the night the Jags were able to whittle things down to 9-4 on a pair of goals with over 6 minutes left. Jake Lavallie scored then shortly after Graham Manders sored to make it 9-4 but could get no closer as the Warriors got one more with 2 minutes left for the 10-4 final.

The netminders-starters and backups- played for both teams. Ashwaubenon goalies combined for 33 saves while Waunakees goalies had 17.

Both teams had a player with a 4 point night. Jacob Thousand had 3 goals and an assist, and the Jags Jacob Lavallie had 2 goals 2 assists. The Warriors also had 3 players with a 3 point night as Justin Kakuska, Jeremy Werner and Sam Marklew  all had ahand in the scoring. With Ashwaubenon scoring 4 goals, 3 were on the power play.
