On Feb. 5, McFarland High School hockey coach Brian Campbell suffered a massive cardiac arrest after parking on Siggelkow Road, just blocks from the village’s ice arena, while heading to the Spartans’ late afternoon practice.
A former player at University of Wisconsin who played professionally in Europe, Campbell, then 57, had remained fit. He worked as a manager at Fabco, a subsidiary of Caterpillar Corp., and continued to coach over several decades.
Last winter, during his third season coaching McFarland, the Spartans earned more wins than they had in 11 years when tragedy struck. Fifteen Spartan players sat in St. Mary’s Hospital’s waiting room to learn about their coach’s condition.
