Section 7 defeated Section 1 5-2 Sunday afternoon in a battle of North and South at the Waupun Community Center to capture the 2010 Senior Class Tournament title.

S7 defeated S8 (5-2) and S5 (5-2) in a scoring trifecta to earn the championship.

The South (Section 7) scored five goals in the first period, including four in the first 10 minutes to coast to an early 5-0 lead.

John Dobson scored at the 2:26 mark, with assists to Zach Blay-Stahl and Max Culp, to notch an early 1-0 lead. Nathan Freeman scored his first of two goals just under four minutes later, with a helper to Max Carrigan, for a 2-0 edge on Section 1.

Chris Ferguson tallied while on the power play at the 9:05 mark, with assists from Mike Yablong and Cory McGilligan to make it 3-0. One minute later, Carrigan added to the lead, scoring with help from Kyle Castle and Freeman.

Freeman ended the period with a goal at 17:17, assisted by Carrigan, to make it 5-0 at the first intermission. S7 held a 13-10 shot advantage in the period.

Section 1 cut the lead to 5-1 when Chris Bishop scored an unassisted goal at the 6:30 mark of the second, and that is how the period ended. Shots were even at nine apiece in the middle period.

The third period turned ugly, as 28 penalties minutes were dished out (S1-18, S7-10), but neither team was able to score. Most of the penalties were of the matching variety, so neither team really had an advantage.

Isaac Haukom (assist by Kellen McCoshen) scored early in the period for S1 to make it 5-2, and that’s how the game would end. Section 1 outshot S7 by a 14-7 margin, but could do no further damage than Haukom’s goal.

Matt Ranta (15) and Michael Parda (16) totaled 31 saves for S7, while Joel Pettingill (8) and Treysen Vavra (16) combined for 24 saves for Section 1.
