After taking one year off to work on some advanced education, Greg Sears returns to the high school coaching ranks at LaCrosse. Sears spent four years as the head man at Webster, amassing a record of 52-32-2.

“I really missed being away from the game,” said Sears. “I literally felt like a fish out of water.”

Sears played high school hockey in Spooner under coach Dan Bauer and then played for the Northwest Wisconsin Knights of the MJHL. An injury prevented him from playing college hockey, but Sears did play baseball at Saint Mary’s University in Winona.

Sears also attended University of Minnesota and is now working toward his personal fitness certification at Heritage College in Wichita, KS.

He is taking over a LaCrosse squad that has had mixed success.

“(We’ll) start small and see what happens,” said Sears. “It’s a fresh start for myself and the kids and I hope to bring a new kind of energy and see if we can’t turn things around.”

During the summers Sears is reunited with Bauer at Top Dog Hockey Camps, which are based in Minneapolis. He also hopes to re-start a “See the Ice” program for youth hockey players that he initiated while in Spooner.

“I love high school hockey,” said Sears. “I really missed being away from the game for a full season.”
