Central girls take beating in championship game

Mid-American scores six in final period for 10-2 win

The Central girls started out well in their title game against Mid-American Sunday morning, but the finish was a different story.

After trailing 2-1 after one period, Central District saw their foes score eight straight goals in 28 minutes and coast to a 10-2 win over Central.

Delayne Ivanowski scored with just under five minutes left in the first period to tie the game at one apiece. 

That was as close as they got.

Mid-American scored twice in the middle period for a 4-1 lead, and then scored six unanswered tallies to finish off Central.

Alyx Richards (Rock County) scored an unassisted goal late in the game to account for the final score.

Haley Hill (Appleton United) had an assist on the first goal.

Shots were 18-18, with Central's Meagan Hearn stopping eight shots. Regina Granata (4) and Morgan Dosterglick (12) combined for 16 saves for M-A.

The Central girls killed off three penalties and came back from a 1-0 deficit midway through the final period to pull off a 2-1 win over the Atlantic squad Saturday evening in the America's Showcase.

After two scoreless periods, Atlantic's Caitlin Costello scored at the 6:24 mark of the final stanza for the 1-0 lead.

Central (2-0-1) tied the game with 2:28 left on Jillian Rowland's goal and got the game-winner from Kirsten Labelle with just seven seconds left.

Central outshot Atlantic in the game by a tally of 43-9. Meagan Hearn had eight saves for Central, while Devon Strachan had 41 stops for Atlantic.

Central will face Mid-American in the title game at 9:00am Sunday, with a third straight championship looming for Central.

The Central girls thoroughly outplayed Rocky Mountain (RM) on Friday, but good netminding limited the score to 3-1 as Central outshot RM 40-3 in the contest.

Alyx Richards (Rock County Fury) scored for Central less than three minutes into the game for the early 1-0 lead.

Jillian Rowland scored twice in the middle period to give Central  3-0 lead going into the final period. Savannah Kopf (Icebergs) earned an assist.

Madison Kirby scored for RM in the third to account for the final score.

Meagan Hearn had two saves for Central, while Zoe Klein stopped 37 of 40 shots fired on her for Rocky Mountain.

THUrsday

The Central District (CD) girls trailed by two goals going into the final period but tallied three scores in the last sixteen minutes of play to earn a 4-4 tie with Mid-American (M-A) on opening day Thursday in Pittsburgh.

Eleni Rapp scored twice for M-A and Angelica Diffendal added one, while Delayne Ivanowski scored early in the second to give Mid-American a two-goal lead entering the final stanza.

Natalie Ryan scored for Central to cut the lead to 3-2 just 1:24 into the third, but Alexziz Giannamore scored for M-A less than a minute later to bump the lead back to a pair of goals.

It looked like the contest would end that way, but Dakota Golde and Ryan scored 47 seconds late in the period to knot the game at four.

Central goalie Meagan Hearn stopped 13 of 17 shots, while M-A goalie Morgan Dosterglick stopped 23 of 27.

The Central District girls will compete for the third year in the America's Showcase hockey tournament held at Robert Morris University in Pittsburgh this weekend.

Central, comprised of players from Wisconsin, Illinois, and Missouri, has won the championship in each of the first two years.

Illinois will provide seven players, Wisconsin six, and Missouri will have a trio of players on the roster.
