Pair of third period goals send Bulldogs to semifinals

The Cedarburg Bulldogs scored two goals early in the third period and held on for a 3-2 victory over the Reedsburg/Wis Dells co-op in the first game of Quarterfinal Thursday at the Alliant Energy Center.

Playing against the top-rated goalie in the state didn't bother the RWD gang, as they scored just 38 seconds into the game on their first shift.

Freshman Dylan Brown grabbed a loose puck in the NZ, skated in alone on Matt McCoy, deked him down and pitchforked a backhander over the goalie's left shoulder for the early 1-0 lead.

The tenacity of the Bulldogs showed late in the period when they battled back to tie the score.

Kyle Samera flipped a shot from the slot that bounced off RWD goalie Mike Olson's glove. As he scrambled to catch it, the glove hand knocked the puck into the net at 11:36. Nick Russo and Evan Gabel earned helpers on the play.

Cedarburg outshot RWD 10-6 in the period.

The Cheavers went ahead early in the second while on the PK.

A Cedarburg pass to their bench area was left unattended due to a possible 'too many men' issue, so Brown said thanks and picked up the puck, motoring down the right side toward the goalie. As he skated in alone he deked across and snuck the puck short side between McCoy's left pad and the post for the 2-1 RWD lead.

McCoy came up big a few minutes later, stopping a couple shots on an RWD 3-on-2 rush.

The rest of the period was a penalty-fest, as a combined six penalties were called over the last nine minutes of the period, but neither squad could take advantage in the period.

Shots were 8-3 in favor of of RWD.

Gabel tied the game just 37 seconds into the final stanza while on the penalty kill. He came in on a 2-on-1, but instead of passing, fired a shot from the top of the left circle that beat the goalie between the wickets. Taylor Curtis got an assist on the shortie.

Three minutes later, James Furey sent a shot between the legs of an RWD defenseman and the goalie to give the Bulldogs the 3-2 lead.

Olson came off with 32 seconds left for an extra attacker, but RWD couldn't score as the Bulldogs earned their first state tournament game victory.

Shots were 8-4 in the period in favor of Cedarburg.

McCoy finished with 16 saves for Cedarburg, while Olson stopped 18 pucks for RWD.

The Bulldogs will meet the winner of the second quarterfinal game between Janesville and Superior in a semi-final matchup on Friday.
