Baraboo/Portage and RWD is a rivalry, like many others in the state, where the many of the players know each other on the ice as teammates in competition outside the WIAA.  However, once the the WIAA season starts and they meet on the ice those friendships are set on the back burner for the next 51 minutes.  The sectional four final was no different and with a little more at stake.

RWD was able to get on the board in the first period, when Jordan Bill put the puck past Baraboo/Portage's Sean McCuthin with Dylan Brown and Darius Scholz assisting at 3:17 of the first penalty.  McCutchin finished the period with 5 saves, while Michael Olson had 9 saves for RWD.

The second period found RWD scoring goal on a combination of a mental lapse by the defense and aggressive play by RWD on the penalty kill.  Baraboo/Portage had the puck in their defensive zone, while on the power play.  The forward on the right side of the goaltender was by the boards.  He dropped a pass for his teammate who was behind the net.  Unfortunately the pass stayed near the goal line and hit the net.  Dylan Brown was pressuring the play.  He was the first to get to the puck and put it in the net giving RWD a 2-0 lead with a shorthanded goal at 3:47 of the second.  Baraboo/Portage was trying to take advantage of their power play opportunity and applying pressure as it came to an end.  RWD's Logan Marsich came on the ice after the penalty expired and was behind the Baraboo/Portage defenders.  Andrew Schulenburg had just gained possession of the puck for RWD and saw Marsich.  Schulenburg passed the puck ahead and Marsich skated it in and scored at 4:46 of the second.  The score at the end of two periods, RWD 3 Baraboo/Portage 0.  McCutchin had 4 saves in the period and Olson had 6 for RWD.

RWD completed the scoring for the game at 9:33 of the third, when Dylan Brown scored with Schulenburg and Marsich assisting.  Olson finished the game with 25 saves, while McCutchin had 11 saves.

RWD's next game will be at the Alliant Energy Center on Thursday, March 5, in the opening game of the WIAA State Hockey Tournament at 11:00 AM.  They will play winner of Sectional Eight.
