Hayes Weiner comes up big for Onalaska

The Onalaska Hilltoppers traveled to University School of Milwaukee to play the Wildcats in their final games prior to the WIAA playoffs.  The Hilltoppers entered the game with an 18-3-1 record, while the USM Wildcats had a 13-8-2 record.

The first period was well underway with both teams moving the puck up and down the ice.  USM’s Brandon McGill was assessed a 2:00 minute minor at 7:53 of the first period for Head Contact.  The Hilltoppers converted the power play on a goal by Tyler Ebner with Bennett Hutson and Cam Oberweiser at 8:51 of the first.  Onalaska increased their lead to two on an unassisted goal by Caleb Blank.  Hayden Brown of USM picked up a penalty for Interference at 13:07 of the first. Mac Schmidt of USM had 8 saves in the first period, while Hayes Weiner had 9 saves for Onalaska.

Onalaska picked up a penalty at 1:41 of the second, when Sam Lass was called for Interference.  The Wildcats took advantage as Chris Keliher fed a pass to Logan Geisness.  Geisness fired a pass to Ben Hrabak on the back side of the net, who tipped it in for a goal at 2:06 of the second to make it a 2-1 game.   Tyler Ebner picked up a penalty at 7:43, but USM was unable to capitalize on the opportunity.  USM’s Tommy Ferrara was called for Interference at 13:46, but this time it was Onalaska’s turn to be unable to take advantage of the chance.  Weiner had 8 saves in the period, while Schmidt had 13 saves for USM.

The third period saw a pair of coincidental minors called, but no more scoring.  Weiner collected 8 more saves and finished with 25 for the game.  Schmidt stopped 12 shots to finish with 33.

Both teams are off until their first game in the playoffs.  Onalaska will play on February 19th at 5:00 PM against Aquinas.  USM will play their first game on Friday, February 20th at 7:30 PM, against Sheboygan.
