Lightning Battle Cougars to a Draw

Battle of the goalies

The Lakeshore Lightning made the trip to Waunakee to take on the Sun Prairie Cougars as both teams are preparing for the WIAA playoffs.  Claire Johnson of the Cougars sang the National Anthem prior to the game.

The Cougars were able to get on the board first, when Annika Johnson scored with an assist from Margo Thousand at 1:53 of the first period.  The Lightning's Alex Burns was called for tripping with 13:45 left in the first.  Lakeshore killed off the penalty.  The period ended with Dani Deltgen having 4 saves for Sun Prairie and Lakeshore's Erin Connolly having 5 saves.

The second period was underway and at the 3:31 mark Alexis Peterson went to the sin bin for a body check.  While Lakeshore couldn't convert on the power play, the Lighning's Riley Schmitter did tie the game 4 seconds later with an assist from Alex Burns.  Lakeshore took a 2-1 lead at 8:04 of the second on a goal by Emily Gabel with Schmitter assisting.  The Cougars tied the game at 15:27 on a goal by Jada Ward with an assist from Annika Johnson.  Deltgen had 8 saves in the period, while Connolly had 16.

The Cougars applied pressure on Connolly in the third, but couldn't slip one by her.  Connolly had 27 saves in the third, while Deltgen had 5.

The game went to the extra period and it was a continuation of the third.  Connolly had 6 saves for a game total of 54.  Deltgen had 3 saves for a total of 20.
