Claim third place in Badgerland Conference Tournament

The Neenah/Hortonville/Menasha Rockets scored early and often to take third place in the Badgerland Conference Tournament, defeating the Fond du Lac Cardinals 9-2 on Saturday.

With starting goalie Preston Long out for the season with a shoulder injury suffered at practice  earlier in the week, junior Riley Malone got the nod for all three games in the tourney. Malone held up his end on Saturday, stopping 21 of 23 shots put on net by Fondy.

The Rockets needed just over three minutes to get the scoring started, when Max hendrickson fired a shot into Cardinals goalie William Shrober's chest. The puck fell to the ice in front of Shrober, and Reid Molitor poked it between the big leg pads.

Just 40 seconds later, Jack Kraus flipped the puck over Shobers shoulder from the top of the crease to put the Rockets up 2-0. Mitch Gerhartz added two more goals in the first period, and the Rockets never looked back.

Malone stopped all 6 shots he saw in the first, while Shober recorded 7 saves.

Travis Treml and Carter Gerhartz increased NHM's lead to six with goals in the second period. Malone stopped seven shots, while Shober stoped 5.

Nate Polakoski took over the goal tending duties for the Cardinals in the third period, and Gerhartz welcomed him to the game with a goal just 1:01 into the frame. Grishaber padded the lead to eight a few minutes later.

The Cardianls finally got on the board with just seven minutes left in the game when Caylen Dyni  scored of a pass from Jack Nejedlo. Nejedlo made it 8-2 a couple minutes later, but that's as close the Cardinals could make it.

Gerhartz added one more to make the final score of 9-2.
