Tritons take top spot in Showdown in Titletown

The Notre Dame Academy Tritons claimed the de facto championship of the Showdown in Titletown, finishing with a 2-0-1 record after downing the Old Abes of Eau Claire Memorial 5-0 on Sunday afternoon at Cornerstone.

Notre Dame scored first on a 3 on 2 rush which ended on a tick-tack-toe play with Collin Appleton scoring off passes from Jett Jaraczewski and Stephen Lovell at 11:50 in the first period.

Old Abe goalie Trevor Hudecek recorded 11 saves in the first period, while Zach Krysiak stopped all five shots for the Tritons.

Jack Wied doubled the lead for NDA five minutes into the second period. Wied caught a pass from Tony Stillwell at the Eau Claire blue line. He skated down the left side and cut in around the face off dot to the net, then slid the puck under Hudecek.

While on a power  play, ECM turned the puck over at the NDA blue line, allowing Appleton to skate in alone on Hudecek and score with a wrist shot to the stick side.

NDA got a killer goal with just six ticks left in the second period. Appleton carried the puck in along the right boards around the net. He saw Bryce Poshak in front and passed it out for a one-timer by Poshak.

Krysiak added another five saves to his total, while Hudecek stopped 10 of 13 in the middle period.

Freshman Nick Schultz came out in net for ECM to begin the final period.

Stillwell made it 5-0 NDA with a wrist shot over the goalie's right shoulder from six feet inside the blue line about four minutes into the final period to account for the final.

Krysiak stopped five in the period to end with 15 in the game, while Schultz had seven saves in the stanza.
