Pirates down Evergreens 6 - 0 to advance in Antigo Tournament

A four-goal second period paved the way for the Bay Port Pirates to advance to the Championship game of the Antigo Holiday Tournament, as they downed the  DC Everest Evergreens 6-0 on Monday night at the Langlade County Ice Arena.

The first period was a tight defensive struggle as each team protected the front of its goal and clogged up the passing lanes. Each team killed off penalties and limited scoring chances. Evegreen goalie Sam Erickson and Bay Port net-minder Sean Angle each stopped five shots.

The Pirates started the second period with 14 seconds left on the power play. Seconds after the Evergreens penalty expired, but before the returning skater could get back to help out, Bay Port got on the board. Logan Froberg was in front of the net and received a pass from Skyler Kring, then fired it just under the glove of Erickson.

Froberg and Kring teamed up again two and a half minutes later on a 2 on 1. Froberg passed the puck to Kring who shot just beyond the outstretched glove of Erickson to give the Pirates a 2-0 lead.

At 9:38, Martin Suda added to the Bay Port lead when he picked up the puck in the right corner, skated out and across the slot, then fired a wrist shot over Erickson. Spencer Challe made it 4-0 just 12 seconds later then he tipped in a pass across the crease from Connor Bagnieski.

Erickson recorded 10 saves in the second period, while Angle stopped all 9 shots he faced.

The Pirates added two goals in the third period, a short-handed goal scored by Challe off a 2 on 1 break with Froberg, and a wrap-around by Froberg from a shot off the back-boards, making the final score 6-0.

The Pirates will face Appleton united on Tuesday for the tournament championship, while Antigo will play DC Everest in the consolation game.
