Hatchets Make A Valiant Effort in Loss

Sometimes you run into a team that is bigger, stronger and faster than you are. The Tomahawk Hatchets faced off against such a team in Michigan's Marquette Sentinels on Friday in the third game of the HodagLand Holiday Tournament in Rhinelander.

The Hatchets have made great strides in improving their program and team the last few seasons, but they didn't have much of a chance against the Sentinels who ended up putting 50 shots on the Hatchets.

Marquette opened the scoring late in the first period after a scrum in front of the Hatchet net.  The Hatchet defense wasn't able to clear the puck away, and one of the Sentinels knocked it past Hatchet goalie Erin Sparks to take a 1-0 lead.

That score stood for the next period and a half. Unfortunately for the Hatchets they found themselves down 5-on-3, which was too much to bear and the Sentinels managed their second goal.

Marquette notched their third, and final, goal with seven minutes left in the game. It was an impressive night for Sparks in net for the Hatchets, turning away 47 of the 50 shots she saw in the game.

Tomahawk only had a few chances in the game, but Madi Ungerer and Erika Vallier both had break aways for the Hatchets but couldn't convert, and while they didn't score, Tomahawk played very well on their power play opportunities.

Tomahawk will continue the HodagLand Holiday Tournament tomorrow against WSFLG, while Marquette will move on to play Fox Cities.
