The Fox Cities Stars Capitalized on Three Rebound Goals to Win

The Fox Cities Stars and Stoughton Co-Op Icebergs played an epic battle of wills on Friday at the Rhinelander Ice Arena.

The teams combined for five goals, all on rebounds, with the Stars taking a 3-2 win.

Freshman Samantha Eyers opened the scoring just 15 seconds into the game by burying a rebound to take the early lead. After a back-and-forth period with the Icebergs controlling most of the pace, the Stars answered back and tied the game with 28 seconds left on the clock.

Brianna Ault knocked home a rebound on an Alli Mork shot to tie the game after one period.

Both goalies stood tall in the second. Ally Fox had the best chance to score in the period. She took the puck in the blocker side corner, dangled around two defenders and put a shot in low on Kenzy Torpy, but Torpy turned it aside and the period ended still tied.

The Stars broke the tie 4:16 into the third period. Nicole Barfknecht took a slap shot from the point, and Fox knocked in her rebound to take a 2-1 lead.

The Stars made it hold up until just 1:26 was left in regulation. After killing off two penalties and having goalie Morgan Talbot make a fantastic save on a shot from the slot by Casey Marsh, the Stars surrendered the lead.

A Stars defender tried to make a pass behind the net, but misaimed and knocked the puck off the side of the net. It bounced out front and an Icebergs forward knocked it in on Talbot, who made a fantastic save, but Savannah Kopf pounded in the rebound to tie the game.

It took just 25 seconds for the Stars to answer back, and again it was a rebound goal by Fox to take a 3-2 lead, and eventually the game.

Neither Talbot nor Torpy allowed a first shot goal. Talbot turned away 23 in the win. Torpy stopped 18 in the loss.
